Rumor mill: Samsung will unveil next-generation foldable phones on August 10 at the Unpacked event. We don’t expect to see too many changes this year, especially when it comes to design, but there are rumors that the company is making minor but significant changes to the names of both devices.
According to leaker SnoopyTech, Samsung will drop the “Z” from the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 names, a change that will also apply to all future foldable devices in the series.
Samsung Electronics is trying to get rid of the “Z” in its series of foldable phones. Starting with Flip/Fold 4, the letter will no longer be printed on boxes. This is because the Russian military uses this letter.

While most consumers tend not to mention the Z part when talking about the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flips, the reason for Samsung’s alleged decision is the negative connotation of the letter after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Hand-drawn Z’s were seen on Russian tanks and military trucks on the Ukrainian border days before the February invasion, and have been used as a symbol of support for Russia ever since. There are several theories about what this means, from Zapad (west), where Russian troops were stationed, to Za pobedy (“for victory”).
In April, a Russian news anchor claimed that Z was actually two 7s stacked on top of each other, one of which was upside down and upside down, meaning 77 years since Victory – the end of World War II.
The video also explains what the letter “Z” stands for: two stacked 7s (one of them upside down), symbolizing the 77th anniversary of VE Day. So, to celebrate the end of World War II, Putin decided to start WWZ. https://t.co/WOvki2nChj

It’s still just a rumor to be taken with a pinch of salt, but it’s entirely plausible, especially since Samsung already removed the Z from the Flip 3 and Fold 3 in Baltic countries like Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia in April. The company is also one of many to stop doing business in Russia, banning shipments of smartphones to the country in March.
Back in May, Russian DOTA 2 player Ivan “Pure” Moskalenko got his team disqualified from the tournament and terminated the contract after the show. what turned out symbol Z during the live broadcast of the match. He stated that it was an “accident” without apologizing.
