rokis is a multi-award winning adventure game inspired by Scandinavian folklore, and arrives on PlayStation 5 on October 28. Set in the stunning, snow-capped forest, you play Tove. She is a young girl immersed in a survival story where you must solve puzzles, collect curiosities and uncover a story of tragic loss. Your quest is to rescue your brother Lars from Roki; A giant pitch-black creature with a mysterious smile. Like in the movie Jaws, our game is named after his monster, though there may be more to Rookie than meets the eye…

As Tove, you explore enchanting 3D worlds, find long-forgotten objects, talk to misunderstood monsters, and solve ancient puzzles to unlock paths deep in the jungle . You can also dive into the pages of Tove’s handwritten magazine, which she explores while charting her adventure. It includes some of his inner thoughts and reflections, along with folklore, loot and “badge” achievements of the woods.

The game’s combination of fairytale adventure, emotional storytelling and a signature graphical art style has won it numerous accolades, nominations for Best Debut Game at The Game Awards, and nominations for Best British Game and Best Debut Game at the BAFTA Game Awards. That was wonderful for us as a small indie team.

adventure for all

Rookie is our focus on modernizing the classic adventure games we loved growing up – games like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango. We wanted to capture the sense of storytelling and adventure from those games, but more importantly, update the play style for audiences today. You take direct control of the Tove with the pad and can explore the world in 3D instead of guiding it with the cursor. Not only does this make the game feel more instantaneous and responsive, but it also allows the player to form a better bond with Tow, rather than direct them from afar, as they are playing as him.

As much as we love classic adventure games, we wanted to create a frustration-free adventure that can be enjoyed by both seasoned and box freshman adventurers. Much of it came down to accessible puzzle design that makes sense to the real world and then Many User tests to see how players have reacted to the gameplay. The game was required to present a challenge, but alternative aids were available in the game if players got stuck. To that end, you can flash the interacting objects in the scene and dip into Tove’s journal for additional clues as to what to do next. Essentially, a story is not a story without an end and we wanted our story to be one that players could enjoy through its final climax pages.

big monsters and a big heart

rokic’s world There’s a wide cast of creatures inspired by Scandinavian folklore, but it’s not just about shooting or hacking monsters you meet in small pieces. Instead, it’s about finding out what’s wrong with them, befriending them, and seeing if you can solve their problems. Sometimes even demons need help.

Now, this sounds cute but Roki is also quite scary. The children’s movies of the eighties we (movies like The Dark Crystal, Return to Oz, and The Neverending Story) weren’t afraid to scare our diminutive audiences to half-death and we followed their lead on pulling no punches with Rookie. Decided to do in the fear department. It also resonates well with the game’s story roots, which were terrifying in their original forms.

storycraft

We firmly believe in the power of video games to tell amazing stories. For our first indie game, we wanted to flex our storytelling muscles and deliver a heartfelt and unforgettable narrative that resonates with players around the world. It is not just a story of folklore, the mystery of the holdings and the forest, it is also a human story of a family reuniting after life-threatening events. Throughout the game, Tov will encounter distorted memories of his past. The player must navigate these living dreams, face Tov’s fears, and solve their puzzles to eventually reunite his family. Without saying much, the family theme runs throughout the game, even among some of its demonic residents.
