See the five women who'll adorn US quarters starting in February

These five American quarters will honor various American women in 2022.

Five women to be honored in the American Quarter in 2022 will appear on a coin to be released in February, beginning with author Maya Angelou.


After Angelou, quarters will honor astronaut Sally Ride, Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller, suffrage movement leader Nina Otero-Warren and actor Anna May Wong.


Maya Angelou, who passed away in 2014, was a noted writer, artist and social activist.

Before this event, some women had appeared on US coins, even in quarters, but they were few and far between. Dr. Sally Ride was a physicist, astronaut, teacher and the first American woman to go into space.

The new image of Washington, created by sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser, is not technically new. It was the winning design in a competition in 1932, when a quarter was issued to mark Washington’s 200th birthday. But then-Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon instead chose a design by John Flanigan.


Nina Otero-Warren was a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools.

The US Women’s Quarter program continues until 2025. Will be issued for five quarters each year.


Anna May Wong was a Chinese-American Hollywood film star who appeared in over 60 films.
