In a nutshell: Games like Dark Souls and Sifu turn many players off. The learning curve and difficulty is too much for some gamers. To make their Sifu kung fu game more accessible, the developer adds difficulty modes to the settings. The mod could make the game much more appealing to the casual player and lead to more sales for the studio.

Sifu Developer Sloclap announced on Tuesday that it will be adding difficulty modes to the Souls-like game in a content update coming May 3rd. There will be three levels – Student, Desciple and Master. The game is already very difficult, so apparently the Student and Apprentice difficulty levels are much lower than the game’s current default difficulty.

In addition to making the game more accessible for those who aren’t patient enough to try and die a thousand times, Sloclap also adds “Advanced Tutorial” and the ability to change clothes. He also laid out his roadmap for the rest of the year.

The Summer Update brings enhanced scoring options and gameplay modifiers. The Fall patch adds even more modifiers and new outfits. It also includes a replay editor to create movie replays of your best fights, which sounds pretty cool.

Finally, the winter update will add the Arena mode. This patch will also feature new gameplay modifiers and outfits. Sloclap didn’t elaborate, but it looks like Arena could be a PvP mode where online players fight each other to show who the real Sifu is.

Sloclap notes that all scheduled content updates for owners of the standard and deluxe editions are free. However, he may add some additional costumes exclusively for the deluxe version of the game. He’s also working on an “upgrade pack” to allow regular players to upgrade to a suite for more perks.

With the addition of new outfits in each update, the question arises as to what cosmetics will be available. Someone made Matrix mod for Sifu on PC. Can we see any Matrix-themed costumes? Probably no. This will likely require expensive licensing, so don’t hold your breath. But consolers should keep their fingers crossed as they don’t have access to cool mods like this one.

In my opinion, lowering the difficulty level somewhat dilutes Sifu. After all, like the Souls series, Sifu was designed to be super-difficult, and the reward was a huge sense of accomplishment at the end of the game – hell, for defeating a level boss, for that matter.

It also makes the core gameplay element less exciting. As you progress, every time you die, you are reborn, but get a little older. With this age comes wisdom in the form of more powerful moves and combinations that also make you more fragile. The addition of Easy Mode severely limits this game mechanic. Luckily, Sifu has a lot of replay value, so increasing the difficulty and replaying it wouldn’t be too bad.
