In a nutshell: Mattel has signed a multi-year deal with SpaceX to create a line of astronomy-inspired toys and collectibles that will debut in 2023. SpaceX-themed toys will be produced and sold under the Matchbox brand. Mattel will also be releasing collectibles through its collaborative and consumer-facing Mattel Creations platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Details are scarce, but it’s probably safe to assume that the Matchbox line will feature various SpaceX rockets. We might even see more exotic creations like Starlink satellites or crew pods.

Hot Wheels, one of Mattel’s other toy brands, has already released a replica of the Tesla Roadster that SpaceX launched into space back in 2018. The casting includes a spacesuit-wearing dummy in the driver’s seat, which SpaceX has named Starman, as if it were the real thing. Hot Wheels also released a miniature version Mars rover Perseverance who landed on the Red Planet in 2021.

The collection line will presumably consist of more detailed products with a premium price tag. Could an Elon Musk action figure be in development?

SpaceX is already selling various branded goods on their website, but most of them are clothes.

The collaboration was announced on July 20, the 53rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
