Substack is releasing a new podcast player, more moderation tools, leaderboard categories and more. announced this week. A new updated podcast player has launched on the Substack iOS app and aims to help users do multiple things on the same screen. The player is initiated as a bottom dock, not an overlay.
The company notes that the actions of the new audio player are grouped into specific rectangular buttons to make it easier for users to distinguish between things like volume sliders and time sliders. Substack also says it’s updated the player’s tactile experience to make it feel more responsive. Some buttons, such as the play and scroll buttons, fire immediately upon touch, while other buttons wait for a more traditional touch to produce a tactile experience.
Substack has also made improvements to its comment reporting tools to make it easier for writers and readers to moderate their own communities. Readers can now report offensive comments to the post’s administrators. Admins can now view, approve, or delete submitted comments. This queue will also show spam comments removed by Substack.
In addition, Substack is introducing new leaderboards for new readers to find writers. There’s a new “Featured Writers” leaderboard that honors writers who have received a huge number of recommendations from fellow Substack writers. This category will feature new publications that have yet to be opened to a wider readership. Substack is also releasing a new “Featured Recommenders” leaderboard that features writers who send many new followers to their fellow writers on Substack.
The company is also introducing a new “International” category for writers covering global events. Users can submit their work to the new category by adding “international” as one of the tags to identify their posts.
Writers now also have the option to post recommendations on the front page of their publication in the form of a “blogroll”. The new option is enabled by default for all posts that have recommendations enabled, but you can turn it off without removing recommendations from other places. Readers can now also find the authors they recommended in the footer of the publication’s main page and on a separate web page.
New features come like Substack recently launched en iOS application for reading. The new “Substack Reader” app consolidates all your Substack subscriptions into one place where you can read the content of the authors you follow. For writers, Substack says the new app will allow them to better connect with their readers, as well as give them more ownership of their content and mailing list. The main focus of the app, according to the company, is to provide users with an easy way to read posts and find new authors on Substack.
