The Walking Dead is coming to an end, but the franchise is rising from the grave. As AMC’s hit zombie-apocalypse show kicks off its final season, a new series has been confirmed: Tales of the Walking Dead.
Set in the expanded universe of the original show, Tales of the Walking Dead will be an anthology series of one-shot episodes focusing on other survivors of a dangerous, zombie-infested world — featuring both new and established characters.
First teased last year, the new spin-off will be the fourth entry in the franchise, following the original show, the semi-prequel Fear the Walking Dead, and the more youth-slanted. While the others each told an ongoing story with an ensemble cast, the new anthology series will bring standalone stories and characters in the vein of Netflix And or Outer Boundaries but with a zombie flavor.
The first season is planned for six episodes of one hour each on AMC and streaming service AMC Plus. There’s no release date yet, but The Walking Dead will continue with Season 11 in early 2022, possibly after the main show is over.
Following the announcement, Scott Gimple, chief content officer for The Walking Dead franchise, said that the show presented an opportunity to tell new stories that other shows could not work out.
“We see enormous potential in this world for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling, and the episodic anthology format of Tales of the Walking Dead will allow us to entertain existing fans and also be an entry point for new audiences.” exclusively on streaming platforms,” Gimple said in a press release. “We’ve seen the appeal of this format in television classics like The Twilight Zone and most recently Black Mirror, and are excited to engage with fans in this new way against the backdrop of this very unique and entertaining world.”
More than ten years after The Walking Dead’s 2010 debut, the franchise remains a huge hit for AMC on live TV and streaming platforms. After the original series ends sometime in 2022, the focus will be on another series, played by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, and still they are in works. There is still life in the Walking Dead franchise.
