Why is PS5 hard to find?
Sony’s latest console is hard to find, even seven months after its launch. Contributing to the difficulty is the fact that scalpers are using bots — andHas sustained. Sony says it is aware of the problem and is working out a solution.
“We’re working as hard as we can to improve that situation,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told Wired on May 12. “We see production increasing in the summer and certainly in the second half of the year, and we would expect to see some sort of return to normalcy in terms of the balance between supply and demand during that period.”
To give you an idea of when retailers will get more PS5s, here’s a list of recent restocks:
- Best Buy, June 3: A surprising recharge lasted longer than usual.
- Target, May 27: We’ve been waiting weeks for Target to be restocked. Unfortunately, consoles sold out very quickly.
- Amazon, May 26: Without PS5s for almost a month, the Amazon Disc console came with a major downgrade.
- Best Buy, May 23: PS5s were in stock at Best Buy, but only for a short time.
- PlayStation Direct, May 20: Sony’s PlayStation Direct site has a unique way of handling restock, putting customers in a digital queue before making their inventory available. See below to see how it works and why it might be your best bet for getting a PS5.
- Walmart, May 20: Big retailers like Walmart are trying to stop bots from buying all their stock, but it’s not working. One thing to remember with Walmart is that it will release inventory in waves, so it pays to stay fresh.
How do I get PS5 from Sony’s PlayStation Direct?
The store with the most frequent PS5 restock is still PlayStation Direct, where drops often happen in the afternoon and people have to queue up for a chance to buy the console. If you don’t get one in a timely manner, it still helps to queue up, as some patient and lucky customers may receive priority access emails directly from Sony. The company hasn’t provided all the details about these PS Direct emails, but you’ll need to sign up for Sony marketing emails and have a PS Plus subscription — and be logged into your PSN account. If luck is on your side, there’s a chance Sony will send you an invite to buy the PS5.
When you’re in a queue, one thing to keep in mind is how much time you have before you get to the front of the line. The smaller, the better, but there’s no guarantee. To help your chances, once you’re in a queue, share the link with your other devices like mobile phones. Make sure each device uses a different IP address – eg your phone is on its mobile plan, while your computer uses your home Wi-Fi. This can improve your chances, as your other devices can be placed in a separate queue that runs faster. Even if you don’t get a PS5, as mentioned earlier, you can still get a pass to buy one the next time around.
What are some tips for finding a PS5?
While major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, Amazon, Target and Best Buy usually don’t give much notice before a restock, your best chance to score a PS5 is to log on correctly when inventory drops. Still, nothing is guaranteed, but there are ways to improve your chances.

If you happen to be on some PS5 availability, go all-in with as many browsers and devices as possible. For example, on desktop, open the retailer’s page in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Tip Second: Create accounts at different retailers and make sure you’re already logged in if you’re going to try to get a PS5. Make sure all your shipping, bill and payment information is updated on any device you can buy from, whether it’s a laptop, desktop or phone. It checks out very fast, which is important because retailers’ sites quickly get bogged down, leaving people with a chance to get a PS5.
