With iOS 15, Apple Wallet will begin taking driver’s licenses, bringing Apple closer to its grand vision of completely replacing physical wallets with digital ones.
it’s part of the story. All the latest coverage from Apple’s annual developers conference.
In Apple’s vision of the future, you and I will leave our homes without a physical wallet. Instead we would walk out the front door with only the virtual wallets stored on our iPhones. We won’t even bring the key.
This week, Apple took a big step toward doing just that, announcedOn Monday that it’ll let your iPhone keep digital versions of your house keys, hotel room keys, work ID, and *cue drumroll*: or other form of government identification. All these changes are expected to come with , which is expected to roll out sometime in the fall. ( .)
Digital driving license and other ID cards are not a new idea. Google and chip maker Qualcomm announce their projectThat’s back in 2019 – but it appears that iPhones will start using the new feature first. Once you’ve set up your driver’s license and other ID card on the iPhone, you’ll be able to present your identity on your iPhone or Apple Watch at airport security (yes, this is state-by-state by TSA on the basis of ID) and any other business that accepts new technology as a proof of ID.
How do you scan your driver’s license on your iPhone with iOS 15
We’ll learn more about the exact steps you’ll need to take once the public beta is ready. For now, we’ve combined Apple’s presentation and website instructions with the current Wallet app on the iPhone.
Phase 1: Make sure the iPhone is in(The public beta arrives in July, and people )
step 2: Open the Apple Wallet app.
step 3: pat + Sign in in the top right corner of the screen and tap a card type, such as an ID, hotel key, digital car key, transit card, and more.
step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to start scanning your driver’s license or state ID using the iPhone’s camera and built-in scanner. For example, Apple will recommend you scan the front of your card first, and make sure you’re in an area with plenty of bright light and a simple, dark background.
Step 5: After scanning your driving license or ID, the Wallet app will confirm when your identity is secure and ready to use.
When you use a driver’s license in Apple Wallet, you’ll first open the app and select your ID. If it’s at a TSA airport security checkpoint, Apple has said it will show you the information it will share, including your legal name, date of birth, ID number and photo, and expiration date.
As with your other sensitive payment cards, if you’re wearing a face mask or don’t use Face ID, you’ll need to confirm the transfer of information through a checkpoint with a pass from Face ID – or possibly your secure passcode.
