If you have a hard time getting your hands on a new GPU or console, Elon Musk says the upcoming Model S ‘Plaid’ EV has a powerful GPU and the computing power of the PlayStation 5.
Tesla’s upcoming “Plaid” Model S vehicle is also a gaming machine, capable of running Cyberpunk 2077.
CEO Elon Musk demonstrated the electric car’s gaming capabilities during the Model S Plaid event on Thursday. The vehicle’s infotainment system was able to play Cyberpunk 2077 smoothly on the car’s 17-inch touch-screen monitor.
“It’s someone who’s playing in the car right now. Playing live,” Musk said. “It’s a high frame rate. It will do 60 frames a second.”
The Model S Plaid can run games thanks to an onboard computer, which apparently has a powerful GPU. “There’s never been a car that has state-of-the-art computing technology, state-of-the-art infotainment, where it really is on PlayStation 5 levels,” Musk said during the event.
A company marketing image also shows that the car can run the games The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cuphead and Fallout Shelter via the infotainment system’s “Arcade” mode. Meanwhile, the 17-inch screen has a 2,200-by-1,300-pixel resolution.
Musk envisions a near future where passengers can play games while Tesla is in self-driving Autopilot mode. “Entertainment is becoming increasingly important. So you want to watch movies, play games, use the Internet.”
The company hasn’t released computing specs for the Model S Plaid. But Tesla’s website notes that the car does offer “up to 10 teraflops” of processing power, along with support for wireless controllers. The vehicle also has a second screen, which enables the passengers in the rear seats to play the game as well.
Gaming capability is an impressive perk. But the plaid model is not cheap. The cost of the vehicle is $129,990. Tesla delivered the first 25 cars on Thursday. The company plans to produce several hundred plaid vehicles per week before increasing production to 1,000 per week in Q3.
