New MacBook Pro 2021 tipped for big reveal at WWDC

Upgraded MacBook Pro 2021 could be showcased at WWDC, says analyst

Apple may launch the MacBook Pro 2021 at WWDC 2021, revealing new 14-inch and 16-inch versions of its flagship laptops.

That’s going by a research note spotted by Nerdshala from Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives, which predicts a MacBook Pro showcase at Apple’s annual developer-focused event. The MacBook Pro reveal will apparently be part of the “few surprises” the Cupertino company has up its sleeve for WWDC.

We’ve already heard other rumors that new MacBook Pros may be revealed at WWDC, which we’ve taken with a pinch of salt because the conference doesn’t typically reveal an Apple hardware. However, a teaser image for WWDC 2021 shows a trio of peering carton-like characters on a MacBook.

Such an image suggests that macOS will be the focus of WWDC, with Apple likely to improve the code to get more performance out of the Apple M1 chip.

However, the Apple M2 chip (or M1X) is predicted to be on the horizon. So Apple could showcase that piece of silicon and then reveal new MacBooks with the chip, perhaps as a call back to the classic “one more thing” style reveal. But somewhat oddly, Ives said that the M1 chip will power the new MacBook, though we suspect it won’t, given the information surrounding an upgraded Apple silicon chip.

Apart from an upgraded chip, we are expecting the MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 2021 16-inch to come with a refreshed design, possibly centered on slimmer bezels around a mini-LED display. The MacBook Pro’s Retina Display could provide better brightness and contrast by moving from backlit LED displays to Mini-LED technology; A boon for photo and video editors.

There are also rumors that Apple is bringing back HDMI and SD card readers for MacBook Pros. And after years of relying on MacBook USB-C connections, MagSafe is poised to make a comeback, too.

Apple’s WWDC 2021 keynote is happening on June 7, so we don’t have to wait long to see if these predictions and rumors come true. But if you want a new laptop right now, check out our round up of the best laptops.
