There’s a new trailer for The Batman coming out this week as part of a DC Fandome livestream on October 16th — but before that, Lego has offered up an early look at the film’s various characters through its series of sets that make up for the rest of the world. The film will tie the knot in Matt Reeves.

The sets don’t spoil anything massive, but they do provide our best look yet at Paul Dano’s portrayal of The Riddler in the film. Before we even get to the set itself, here’s how Lego has brought the villain to life — next to minifigure versions of Robert Pattison’s Batman and Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon:

It’s not a leak, mind – you can check out the set, known as The Riddler Face-Off, on Lego’s official website right now. It releases in January, a few months before the film.

The costume coincides with a brief glimpse of the character during last year’s The Batman trailer, where the costume appears to be handcrafted with glasses, a raincoat and a sort of mask. The character’s appearance, along with the use of The Riddler who appears in the film as a cyborg code, has led to comparisons with the real-life Zodiac Assassin.

This coincides with the more realistic vibe of the costumes worn by Batman and Catwoman in the film, which is set during the second year of the Dark Knight’s career and is expected to be a noir-like spy film.

Check out the full suite of sets below, which don’t reveal much about the film, but offer a better glimpse at the Batmobile than we’ve seen before.

Analysis: How Batman might have done things differently

Everyone in Batman stories always has the same complaint: How many times can we see Wayans die in Crime Alley? It’s a typical point about how often Batman’s origins are repeated in various media, but it also talks about the Dark Knight’s widespread ubiquity in media — and how easy it is to realize that you’ve come before. Have seen everything for the Caped Crusader on the big screen.

If you’ve seen last year’s trailer for The Batman, it’s hard not to see too much of Nolan’s films in what Matt Reeves has to offer — which tend to give audiences more of a real-world setting than the ‘backs. Two Basics’ approach. In fairness, they’re both portrayed in comics as influences from the same well of believable Batman stories, like The Long Halloween and Year One. These tell more grassroots Batman stories that are fitting for a movie.

Batman can really differentiate itself from Nolan movies by focusing on the detective elements of the character. That’s why The Riddler is a good choice for a villain – he’s confused and thinks he’s smarter than the people trying to capture him. If Dano’s villain went down the serial killer route, it would be a perfect MO.

In comics, The Riddler (or Edward Nygma) is often portrayed as a villain who is too easily underestimated. In Comic Hush, for example, one of the best-selling Batman stories of the past two decades, he is the ultimate mastermind behind a colossal plot against the Dark Knight—like the Joker, Poison Ivy, and even Superman. Pieces moving on the board. hiding in plain sight.

In the 2013 comic Year Zero, he has Gotham City, which turns the city into a nightmare. In the 2017 comic The War of Jokes and Riddles, he battles with The Joker for supremacy over Gotham’s underworld – placing him on a par with Batman’s most famous villain.

If all you know about this character is from Jim Carrey’s appearance in Batman Forever, well, you’ve really only scratched the surface of what he’s about. In the right hands, he could leave an impact similar to the Dark Knight’s previous iconic on-screen opponents.
