Hosted by game journalist Geoff Keighley, The Game Awards is easily one of the biggest events in the gaming calendar. The annual awards ceremony honors achievements in gaming, including Best Fiction, Best Indie Game, Game of the Year, and more.

But The Game Awards is not just an awards ceremony, it also serves as a game showcase. Usually the event is filled with world premieres, announcements, and revelations of some of the biggest upcoming games – plus lots of surprises and special guests.

In 2014, The Game Awards revealed the first gameplay trailer for Breath of the Wild, while, at The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft gave us our first look at The Xbox Series X console. The Elden Ring gameplay was revealed for the first time last year, alongside teases for a new Mass Effect game. Expect similar big announcements at this year’s show.

The Game Awards 2021: Announcement Predictions

So what should we expect from The Game Awards 2021? Well, for a start, we know that as big as Elden Ring gameplay, “four or five things” will happen at Summer Game Fest 2021, including the announcement of a brand new game from the major studios. Keighley has also teased that viewers will get a sense of “the next generation of gameplay in the show,” which means we can expect some reveals or premieres for the upcoming Xbox Series X and PS5 games.

The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is also due out at The Game Awards. We don’t know much about this “interactive storytelling experience” yet, but the website description reads: “Get ready for a glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment with UE5”. So, expect a mind-blowing tech demo with the appearance of the cast of The Matrix revival, including Keanu Reeves. It’s available to pre-download on PS5 and Xbox Series X right now.

Former BioWare General Manager, Aryan Flynn has also teased, New games from his studio, Improbably, will be announced at the show.

What we shouldn’t expect, however, is an announcement or reveal from Activision Blizzard. Keighley’s Confirmed The publisher won’t be attending The Game Awards outside of its nominations, so don’t expect any new Call of Duty, or updates on upcoming titles like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Also, we are mainly looking at rumours. Keighley has said that most of the rumors he reads online are false, but we can see what some sports fans are hoping for. Just a few game rumors suggest include Breath of the Wild 2, the new Splinter Cell game, BioShock 4, Forza Motorsport, Fable, Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy. There are also rumors of a Chrono Cross remake and the reveal of the next fighting game from Nether Realms studio.

But it’s not just games that are shown at The Game Awards, so we’re looking forward to getting a proper look at HBO’s The Last of Us TV show and yet another trailer for the Uncharted TV series.

In addition, expect guest appearances from Guillermo del Toro, The Book of Boba Fett’s Ming-Na Wen, The Last of Us 2’s Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey, Far Cry 6’s Giancarlo Esposito, former Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime . Matrix’s Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, streamer Jack Septic Eye, Epic Games’ Donald Mustard, plus performances from Sting and Imagine Dragons — and more.

The Game Awards 2021 nominees

Here’s a list of the nominees for (most) award categories at this year’s Game Awards. We’ve left out those related to eSports and Content Creator of the Year, but you can find those nominations on the Game Awards official site.

Some categories are fairly self-explanatory – like best RPG or best action game – but others can be a bit more confusing. Under those headings, you’ll find our brief explanation of how the winners are chosen, as well as information on how that category can give us an indication of which games will win the show’s most coveted prizes.

If you’d like to vote for your favorite games to win, remember to visit the Game Awards website to cast your vote ahead of this year’s event.

game of the year 2021

Game of the Year is awarded to – you guessed it – the best game released in the past year according to fans and judges. It is often a difficult category to predict before the night starts, although as the prizes roll in, it can quickly become clear which game is the favourite.

Based on previous winners, we suspect this will be a single-player action/adventure game with elements of open-world exploration (with six of the seven previous winners falling in this category). A lot of those on this list tick those boxes too so this year it’s anyone’s game.

  • deathloop
  • it takes two
  • metroid dread
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Ratchet and Clank: Apart from the Rift
  • Resident Evil Village

Best Game Direction

It’s hard to determine the best game direction next to Game of the Year because the two categories can often feel very similar – and that’s why most years the winner is the same for both awards.

Sorry returnl, but as the only game on this list not featured in the Game of the Year category, you could be at a statistical disadvantage.

  • deathloop
  • it takes two
  • returnal
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Ratchet and Clank: Apart from the Rift

best story

Which game of the year had the best story? This is a fairly self explanatory category where the judges are asked to consider the underlying story above all other aspects when viewing the games.

  • deathloop
  • it takes two
  • Life is Strange: True Colors
  • marvel’s guardians of the galaxy
  • Psychonauts 2

Best Art Direction

‘Are video games art?’ One is often debated, and the goal of this category is to pick games from the past year that prove the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.

  • The Artful Escape
  • deathloop
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Ratchet and Clank: Apart from the Rift

Best Score & Music

If you love listening to video game soundtracks, this category is worth considering because you’ll definitely want to add winning scores to your playlist.

Usually longer adventure titles have an advantage here as players spend a lot more time listening to scores than shorter experiences but we’ll have to see.

  • The Artful Escape
  • cyberpunk 2077
  • deathloop
  • marvel’s guardians of the galaxy
  • Near Replicant VER.1.22474487139

best audio design

Audio design differs from score and music as it is about judging the immersive feel of the game’s audio and how well the actual word sounds are translated into the virtual space.

For example Call of Duty: Modern Warfare won in 2019 for its emphasis on making indoor fired guns different from those fired outdoors – the two again being different if a weapon in a door is fired.

  • deathloop
  • forza horizon 5
  • Ratchet and Clank: Apart from the Rift
  • Resident Evil Village
  • returnal

games for influence

  • before your eyes
  • lover dungeon
  • Chicory: A Colorful Story
  • Life is Strange: True Colors
  • no longer home

best running game

These games won’t be releasing this year, but the developers are providing new content and updates that keep the experience as fresh as it originally was at launch.

  • Apex Legends
  • Final Fantasy XIV Online
  • fortnite
  • jenshin effect
  • Call of Duty: Warzone

best indie game

This category celebrates games from creatives outside the traditional publisher system – independent creative teams that deliver a more unique experience than you’d normally expect from AAA blockbusters.

  • 12 minutes
  • death’s Door
  • encryption
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits
  • loop hero

best mobile game

  • Imagination
  • jenshin effect
  • League of Legends: Wild Rift
  • miracle future revolution
