There hasn’t been a flood of leaks surrounding the Huawei Mate V – supposedly a clamshell foldable that’s on the Nerdshala of launch – but we’ve heard some rumors about it. Now a patent has surfaced that explains how Huawei can keep this device cool.

The patent, spotted by LetsGoDigital (via, outlines a clever thermal management system that includes a folding heat pipe. The heat pipe hasn’t traditionally been a part of smartphones known for their folding capabilities, but it appears that Huawei’s engineers have found a way to pull it off.

As with the patent as usual, there is no indication as to which device it could appear. With the Huawei Mate V rumored to launch earlier this month, this unconventional, bendable heat pipe will likely not be included.

What seems clear now is that Huawei is committed to pushing more foldable phones in the future. Huawei is one of a handful of manufacturers that have decided to put out phones you can fold – check out the Huawei Mate X, Huawei Mate X, and Huawei Mate X2.

The Huawei Mate V looks a bit different, and is said to be adopting the clamshell form factor of phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Motorola Razr. If the leaks are true, we can’t wait to see it for ourselves.

Analysis: Foldables are where the innovation is

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The discovery of this new patent from Huawei is another reminder of where a lot of innovation is happening in the smartphone industry: in foldable devices. While standard phones give us just that, foldables offer something that really feels different – and from the future.

Of course the main innovation is the folding mechanism at the center of each device. As companies like Samsung have released more and more folding phones – such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 – the technology has matured and become more reliable over time.

However, manufacturers are using the foldable to showcase other cutting edge features – think secondary screen for notifications, selfie cameras residing under the screen, and support for stylus. And now, probably, folding heat pipes.

It’s almost as if the folding phone form factor gives manufacturers license to be a little more experimental, and that’s something we welcome. It looks like we’re going to be getting a lot more of these innovative devices in the future as well, with the likes of Google and Apple rumored to be entering the fray in the next few years.
