“I’ve always said that everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m so grateful DC and Warner Bros. shared this idea,” said Superman: Sons of Kal-El author. Tom Taylor said in the announcement. “The symbol of Superman has always stood for hope, truth, and justice. Today, that symbol represents something else. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superheroes in comics.”

Originally introduced in 2015 Convergence: Superman #2, John Kent takes over as Superman after his father, the original Superman, has decided to focus on supernatural events such as the recent Warworld saga in Action Comics. John’s sexuality has been teased in a previous issue of Superman, Kal-Eli’s son – indicated strongly in recent months with an attraction to a fellow reporter named Jay Nakamura.

According to DC, Kent and Nakamura become romantic in Superman: Son of Kal-El #5.

“We couldn’t be more excited to tell this important story of Tom Taylor and John Timms,” says DC CCO/Publisher Jim Lee. “We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We see John Kent finding his identity in the comics, as well as John Kent on Superman and Lois as his family on TV. can learn mysteries. . They coexist in their own world and time, and our fans get to enjoy both together.”

The timing of DC’s announcement does not seem coincidental. The deadline for comic book retailers to finalize order copies of Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 is October 17th — six days from now. It appears that DC is anticipating increased interest and is giving readers and retailers time to adjust their orders before setting off on the issue’s initial print run.

John’s sexual identity is confirmed shortly after by another teenage DC protagonist, Robin (Tim Drake), which came out as Queer in August Batman: Urban Legends #6.

Superman: Son of Kal-El #4 Superman: Son of Kal-L will be available for sale on October 19th with #5 set for November 9th.
