Today in New York, OnePlus held its first in-person launch event in over two years. That’s a lot of time for a company that has relied so heavily on its fan base for previous launches. Accordingly, the Gotham Hall event was packed with fans and members of the press. COVID-19 may still be coming, but the OPPO-owned company is using its second 2022 flagship release to revive some of those roots.
It turns out that the OnePlus 10T has a lot of preparation time. Pre-orders for the device open in just under a month, and the phone will finally start shipping on September 29th. So you have enough time to make a decision. The device also keeps up with the company’s mid-range prices (although they’ve started to move a little higher in recent years), starting at $649 for the 8GB/128GB version and $749 for the 16GB/256GB version.
In terms of specifications, the device looks about the same as past OnePlus flagships. There is a 6.7-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate (adaptive) powered by an 8+ Gen 1 chip. There is a 4880mAh battery on board coupled with 150W fast charging capable of fully charging the device in 19 minutes (although here , in North America, the maximum power is 125 watts).
On the back is a triple-camera system spearheaded by a 50-megapixel Sony sensor. This is complemented by ultra-wide and macro. The latter is an interesting addition that is slowly starting to catch on. The body of the device also houses a system of 15 antennas for enhanced connectivity.
Interestingly, the features above meant the need to reset the phone alert slider — a mainstay in the lineup since the 3T was introduced. The company writes
In order to implement the three technologies above, our design team has increased the utilization rate of the OnePlus 10T motherboard layout to 78% compared to our standard standard of 74%. Although the alert slider seems like a very small component, it actually has a relatively large impact on the device’s motherboard footprint – taking up 30mm.2. To ensure that the OnePlus 10T performs in the areas we know our users value most – with high power charging, large battery capacity and improved antenna signal while maintaining the alert slider, we would have had to fold the device motherboard that made the device thicker. So this time around, we’ve decided to remove our signature alert slider so we can provide these technologies while still maintaining a premium hand feel.
The 3T will go on sale September 1st. As for the long standby time, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this is the first OnePlus device announced since co-founder Carl Pei’s Nothing Phone (1). This device is not intended for release in the US and drops some key features (including the processor) in favor of a newer design language.
