TikTok is testing a dedicated “Shop” tab that allows users to browse and buy products from various categories such as clothing and electronics. The company confirmed to TechCrunch that the tab is currently being tested in Indonesia. The Store tab serves as a hub for products sold in Shop TikTok, a shopping feature that allows sellers and creators to showcase and sell products directly on TikTok, the company said. The TikTok store is currently available in select markets including Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the UK.
Screenshots of the new Store tab posted by a product analytics firm vigilant.ay show that the tab is displayed next to the “Subscriptions” and “For You” tabs on the main screen of the application. It includes a search bar as well as various shopping categories including cosmetics, womenswear, electronics, accessories, bags, kitchen, shoes, baby products, office, linens and more. You can see from the screenshots that the Store tab has perks such as free shipping on some purchases.
The Store tab also has a cart icon in the top right and a menu in the bottom right that includes orders, messages, vouchers, address, and payment. The order page is designed to help users track their orders, shipments, and returns. The vouchers page shows used and unused coupons, as well as a tab for invalid coupons. In addition, the payment page allows you to manage your payment information and add a credit or debit card. It’s not clear what the messages tab is for, but it may allow users to send messages to merchants with product information.
“We are always looking for ways to improve our community experience and regularly test new features that inspire creativity, bring joy, and update the TikTok experience,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement. The “Shop” tab is currently being tested in Indonesia and serves as a hub for products sold in the TikTok store. Brands on TikTok have found a creative outlet for authentically connecting with audiences, and we’re excited to experiment with new commercial opportunities that allow our community to discover and engage with what they love.”
TikTok hasn’t said when or if it plans to bring the Store tab to more markets.
TikTok’s new Shop tab is similar to Instagram’s. The Meta-owned platform has unveiled its redesigned store tab in 2020 and describes it as a place where users can view products from their favorite brands and creators. On the Store tab, you can filter by categories such as beauty and home, for example, and then checkout directly in the app.
TikTok’s larger goal, with its Store tab, could ultimately be to challenge Facebook and Instagram.
The launch of the Store tab comes as TikTok has expanded its investment in e-commerce over the past year, and not just in Asia. Last year, the video platform launched Piloting TikTok Shopping in the US, UK and Canada in partnership with Shopify. The deal allowed Shopify sellers with a TikTok For Business account to add a Shopping tab to their TikTok profiles and sync their product catalogs with the mini-storefront app. In September 2021, the company also added online shopping, which allows brands to connect with users in real time and share dynamic links to products and services while streaming content live.
While it’s not known when the Store tab will hit other markets, it looks like TikTok wants to test and develop it for a specific audience before offering it to its users around the world.
