According to Downdetector, which tracks site outages, thousands of users began reporting outages around 8 a.m. EST. After about an hour, access to Twitter began to return to some users.

Twitter’s status page says the company is “investigating the matter” on Thursday morning. Shortly after 12:30 pm EST, Shared Twitter Support that the social media platform “should work as expected”.

Netblocks, an internet monitoring group that monitors attempts to deliberately block internet access, told the Associated Press on Thursday morning that Twitter is “experiencing severe international outages” but that this is “not due to internet outages or country-level filtering.”

The global outage came at a turbulent time for Twitter, which sued Tuesday against Elon Musk after the billionaire backed out of a $44 billion deal to buy the company.
