Why is it important: Verbatim has announced a new SSD designed specifically for long-term storage. The company’s WOV series is an external SSD that contains 128GB of NAND flash and connects to your PC via USB 3.2 Gen 1. Verbatim markets it as a write-protected SSD, which means you can only read from it in normal conditions.
To write to a disc, you must first install special software that is only compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Drive unit compatible with Windows, Mac and Chromebook, but limited to read-only mode. The idea is to protect critical files from being accidentally deleted or overwritten.
Read and write speeds are rated at 540MB/s and 180MB/s, respectively. To do this, you will have to take over the work of Verbatim, as the disk will give an error when you try to run the test program.
Verbatim stated that the drive uses high-quality MLC NAND flash memory. Since the recording is not recorded over and over again, there is little to worry about degradation. As such, Verbatim claims that users can expect data to remain intact for 10 years or more when stored at or below 55 degrees Celsius.
Incidentally, this drive is covered by a 10-year hardware warranty, under which Verbatim will replace the failed drive during that period. Notably, the warranty does not guarantee saved data, so you will probably need an additional backup as a failover. Moreover, Verbatim states that data cannot be erased and the only way to effectively do so is to physically destroy the SSD.
There is no information yet on when Verbatim WOV Series SSD will be launched or how much it will retail for.
