TikTok wasn’t always TikTok. In 2014, the popular lip sync app Musical.ly appeared. Full of people saying the words to popular songs, it was eventually bought for around $1 billion. Chinese technology company ByteDance in 2018. All in a year Musical.ly accounts have been integrated into TikTokaccording to Vox.
The new app continues to be a popular destination not only for lip syncing, but also for tasks, sketches, and memes. The app has many publishing options, including a “Duet” feature. Here, users can make a simultaneous video next to another user’s post, “Duet.”

How to duet on TikTok
- Find the post you want to duet.
- Click the Share button, which is the pink arrow below the bookmark icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Click the “Duet” button.
- In some cases, the user may disable the use of duets in their messages, which looks like a disabled “Duets” button.
- Press and hold the pink button until you’re done recording.
- At this point, you can change the speed of the video and add filters/effects.
- Click on the pink tick at the bottom.
- Add extra embellishments to your video.
- You can add text, stickers, and other effects to your post, change your privacy settings, and adjust the volume.
- When finished, click Next.
- Add caption, location and adjust video settings.
- Here you can allow or disallow duets and, again, change your privacy settings.
- When you are satisfied with your choice, click “Publish” and your duet is ready.
How to stitch TikTok
Stitch on TikTok is like a duet. Instead of having your video play simultaneously side by side with other users from start to finish, Stitch will play a portion of the original TikTok and then it will be cut into your video that you recorded.
- Find the post you want to duet.
- Click the Share button. (It’s the pink arrow below the bookmark icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.)
- Click the Stitch button if it’s not greyed out.
- Select the part of the video you want to stitch, then click next.
- Record your video and add additional edits such as filters or enhancements.
- Click on the pink tick at the bottom.
- Add more embellishments to your video, then click next.
- Add caption, location and adjust video settings.
