There are strict rules for participating in the payout program. Writers must have a completed novel-length story (50,000 words or more) and must have published at least one chapter of the story in the last three months.

Writers must also have at least one story in suitable genres as General Fiction, Romance, Vampire, Action, Teen Fiction and Horror, with minimum number of Engaged Readers for this genre. The criteria for engaged readers range from 9,000 for regular fiction to 100 for horror. While authors can tag genres for their stories themselves, a panel of experts checks these tags for the new program so that the story can be assigned to one of the appropriate genres.

The company considers a person as an interested reader who has spent more than five minutes on an article in the last 365 days. Wattpad also has other metrics such as “Total Reads” which measures the number of non-unique reads of a story over all time, and “Unique Reads” which is a daily read or view by a unique user over a 30-day period.

Wattpad is not the first platform to use such a metric for paid contributors. In 2019, Medium introduced similar strategy by measuring post reading time and paying authors accordingly.

The company is testing the Engaged Readers feature with multiple writers to determine which readers of its 94 million monthly active users read stories for longer periods of time. Users are said to spend over 23 million minutes on the platform reading various stories, so this new feature will give more insight into where readers spend more time.

“As the popularity of web novels around the world continues to grow, we are going to continue to create new tools for writers to do their best work, expand their fandoms and ultimately make more money from their stories. Engaged Readers is the first step in a series of new initiatives we are planning for 2022 and beyond. Together with our writers, we are helping to grow the global web novel market by creating more opportunities for writers to develop their fandoms and monetize their work.” the company said in a statement.

Wattpad president Jeanne Lam told TechCrunch that compared to traditional publishing, a bookstore can tell you how many copies it has sold, but they can’t tell you if a customer has read the book.

“The Engaged Readers feature gives writers a new metric to actually understand how people interacted with their stories in the past year,” she said.

The Wattpad Creators Program is currently rolling out to English-language writers, with Philippine and Spanish-language markets coming soon. This year the company plans to include up to 3,000 writers in the program.

Lam elaborated that all authors included in the program will receive editorial support, marketing and audience acquisition coaching, access to special tools for authors and affiliate discounts, as well as the opportunity to work with brands. Wattpad also wants to give writers more insight into what stories and plots work well on the platform. However, not all writers will receive scholarships, and there are different levels to reach the $25,000 figure.

“We are building a creative economy for writers and investing in a wide variety of writers from around the world. And one of the things we know about is how much our creators want to thrive on Wattpad. So one of the most valuable things we can do is support them by investing heavily throughout their writing journey, and we can be proud of this program we are launching,” Lam said.

She mentioned that even if a writer is not eligible for the program, they can learn more about the various possibilities and methods to improve their writing through new portal for Wattpad creators.

Along with this, to make its platform more appealing to readers, Wattpad will be launching exclusive stories from some well-known writers. Among these writers is the novelist Tamara Lash, who wrote Drive as well as crash; Jessica Cansolo, author With me series — more than 1 billion views on the platform with a television series adaptation in the works; Keith Marchand, author of the novel and upcoming film by Robbie Amell. To swim; Sondy Warner, fantasy novel author Lead me astray with over 260,000 reads; and Claudia Tan, author of the book Perfect Addictionanother novel that was made into a feature film by Wattpad Webtoon Studios.

The company claims to have converted 1,500 stories on the platform into various films and published books.

Last year, Medium has updated its creator with referral bonuses, in addition to depending on how much time the reader spent on the story. Other competing platforms such as Ghost, Scribdas well as substack focus on the number of paid subscribers to distribute money among writers after the reduction. Facebook also launched a new platform to support independent writers called Bulletin last year.

However, Wattpad wants to stand out by supporting web novelists by offering them several ways to make money: paid stories, brand partnerships, potential book and movie deals, and now a new author program.
