Maybe it’s something up in the air, but right now it seems like half of the new books on the shelves are about the climate crisis in one way or another. The environment takes center stage in at least three of the 15 books on the latest WIRED recommendations for readers. But this is only the beginning. The books on this list also cover language, blackness, fact death, and dolphin handjobs. When we say there is something for everyone here, we really mean it. This is our selection of books we think you should read this spring and summer.

Carlo Rovelli
Although I had a little laugh at Carlo Rovelli in a recent essay on computer simulation in which we apparently live, he is still my favorite living – “live” – ​​physicist. He is studying one of the coolest things in the universe: loop quantum gravity. But when he’s not trying to unify physics, he reads novels, philosophy, and poetry—and would indeed say that one cannot exist without the other. In this collection of newspaper columns over the past few years (how many physicists do you know who write for newspapers?), Rovelli emphasizes again and again that without the humanities there can be no scientific progress. Only boring drivers stay in their lane. Rovelli really wants to visit places: places with answers. Sometimes he even gets there. — Jason Kehe

Mark Anthony Neal
There is a catch-22 associated with the fact that this is the main root of creative work in the world: with a single impact, there is a very real danger of humiliation, theft and total erasure. Black culture is the most influential cultural generator of our time, so what is being done to preserve how we remember everything that is created? According to Mark Anthony Neal, an academic at Duke University, these are critical “issues related to the production, distribution, and archiving of Blackness—problems that are exponentially exacerbated in the digital age.” AT black ephemera, Neil conducts an impressive symphony of memory work. The digital frontier has changed what the archive looks like, how it functions, where it is located and who gets access to it. Neal believes these are important factors, especially when considering “artifacts that can be seen as literally afterthoughts – as a culture that doesn’t need to be curated.” Because the chapters diverge in subject matter and breadth, the book feels like a mixtape. There is one on the pioneering Memphis label Stax. There is another chapter on the distillation of black women’s trauma through pop culture, and another on how black collective mourning is created, transmitted, and digitally preserved. All in all it is an impressive totem and a guide to the importance of preserving things forgotten in our rush to the future. — Jason Parham
